Family of Origin
Family of Origin Therapy
Are you feeling trapped by the decisions you made in the past, by the role your family expects you to
fill or by the unmentioned force of your own culture or gender?
Wherever you go, there you are. Who you are is a reflection of the culture, values, and beliefs you
learned from your family. Your sense of self, self-concept, and self-efficacy develop in relation to
or in spite of the interactions you have with your family of origin. If your family of origin was
marked by issues such as abuse, addiction or poverty you may experience difficulties in later life
when you start your own family. You may feel inadequate about your ability to demonstrate love. You
may lack real-world skills. You may have issues with trust.
